Flow passes through a stratified embankment from a lake with a water level of 10 m on the upstream side to a water level of 3.4 m on the downstream side. The layers and their hydraulic conductivities are shown below. The length of the embankment between upstream and  downstream boundaries is 30m and the infiltration rate is 25 cm/year.

Develop a three layer MAGNET model and find the flow into the lower reservoir through the embankment and the distance from the upstream end at which layer 3 becomes unsaturated. Also solve the problem analytically and compare the results, and explain the difference, if any.

MAGNET/Modeling Hints:

  • Use ‘Synthetic mode’ in MAGNET to create a model domain.
  • Make a 3-layer aquifer model to represent the two formations. Make sure to assign appropriate aquifer elevations and hydraulic conductivity to the different layers.
  • Add prescribed head line or zone features along the left and right edges to represent the lake and stream. Note that the lake and streams are fully connected to all three layers (they should exist in all model layers).
  • Analyze the results in cross-section view ( 'Analysis Tools' > 'Analysis' > 'Display Charts') to visualize the shape of the water table.
